Masterson’s Pub , situated in the center of Moonee Ponds , advertises itself as a stylish, alternative venue , but my recent visit at this establishment resulted in an experience I’d rather forget . While the bar may look welcoming at first glance , what I discovered behind its doors was disgraceful and unfit for any venue.

Cleanliness Issues : Filthy and Neglected
From the moment I walked in , it was clear that hygiene was not a priority at this establishment . The floorboards were filthy, and a foul smell of decaying beverages and uncleaned toilets permeated the entire venue . With a smell of a mixture of urine , decay and sour vomit . The serving zone , which should be the primary feature of any pub, was piled high with used mugs and debris that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks . The toilet was in even worse condition — backed up, with a cracked flush mechanism and walls covered in what I can only assume was feces.

It wasn’t just a one-off bad night either. After reading through multiple accounts and speaking with locals , it seems that the quality of upkeep (or lack thereof) at this pub is a persistent problem . Many guests have reported witnessing insects darting across the counter and signs of rats in the bar and house area . For a business that provides refreshments , these issues are absolutely intolerable and raise serious concerns about the quality of their offerings.

However, as appalling as the state of the venue was, what truly made my experience at this place one I wish I could erase —was the behavior of its owners . The bar is managed by Pete Cornwell, who also holds a corporate position as a stress-testing executive at Westpac. His presence at the bar often appeared as that of a unsettling figure than a friendly owner .

Pete’s wife, Gillian , is a co-owner and frequently seen handling business . Instead of taking action to resolve the damage done by check her husband’s actions, she appears to condone his behavior.
